Matthew intentionally includes four women in Jesus’ genealogy who were not the expected “perfect” matriarchs:
- Tamar (Genesis 38) – A Canaanite who used deception to secure her rights in the family line.
- Rahab (Joshua 2) – A prostitute from Jericho who hid the Israelite spies and became a woman of faith.
- Ruth (Book of Ruth) – A Moabite widow, from a nation cursed in Deuteronomy, who showed loyal love.
- Bathsheba (wife of Uriah) – Involved in the adultery with David that led to murder.
Why did Matthew include them?
These women show that God’s redemptive plan has always worked through flawed, broken, and even scandalous people. Yeshua willingly entered a messy human family line to redeem it. Their inclusion proves that grace, not perfection, has always been the way God builds His kingdom.
Yeshua Connection:
Jesus is not ashamed to be associated with sinners. He is the Savior who came for the broken.
