Short Explanation
In this powerful “I Am” statement, Yeshua presents Himself as the only legitimate entrance into God’s fold. True shepherds point to Him. Thieves and hirelings do not. The sheep hear His voice and find safety and pasture only through the Door.
The Verse
“And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.” — John 10:16 NKJV
Straightforward Meaning (in context)
Yeshua is speaking to Jewish listeners. The “this fold” refers to Israel (the Jewish people). The “other sheep” refers to the Gentiles (non-Jews) who would also come to faith in Him. The result is one flock (the Church) under one Shepherd (Christ). This is the mystery of Jew and Gentile becoming one new people in Christ.

It is a beautiful promise of the gospel going to all nations — not a statement about different gospels, different scriptures, or different folds in different places.
How Heresy Can Creep In
Groups that claim to be the “other sheep” in a special or exclusive way often use this verse to justify:
- Additional scriptures or revelations for “their fold”
- A different covenant or restored gospel for their people
- The idea that the “one flock” includes multiple separate groups with separate prophets/leaders
The most common example is the Latter-day Saints (LDS) teaching that the “other sheep” were the ancient inhabitants of the Americas, and that the Book of Mormon is the record of those “other sheep.” They use this to support the idea of a restored gospel with additional scripture and modern prophets.
This interpretation takes the verse out of its clear context (Jew + Gentile = one Church under Christ) and turns it into justification for adding to the finished work of Yeshua.
Discernment Note
Some groups claim to be the “other sheep” in a way that justifies additional scriptures, a different gospel, or separate prophets. The context of John 10 shows Yeshua bringing Gentiles into the one flock under the one Shepherd — not creating separate folds with separate revelations. Any teaching that adds to or changes the gospel of Christ fails the test of “one flock and one shepherd.”
