** Treasure Valley Fox - The Wicket Gate**
The Pilgrim’s Progress
From This World to That Which is to Come
Master Index – The Narrow Gate: Yeshua Alone
**The Wicket Gate - Yeshua - The Only Name - The Only Way
Simple Definition
A wicket gate is a small side gate or door set within a larger wall or fence. In Bunyan’s allegory, it is the only authorized entrance to the narrow way that leads to the Celestial City (eternal life). Christian is repeatedly directed to it by Evangelist: “Do you see yonder wicket-gate?” Once he reaches it, Goodwill (representing the grace of Christ) opens it and pulls him inside, protecting him from the arrows of Beelzebub.
Biblical Foundation
Bunyan draws directly from Scripture:
- Matthew 7:13-14 — “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
- John 10:9 — Yeshua declares: “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”
Bull’s Eye
You may be hitting the bull’s eye with every arrow you notch, but are you aiming for the right target?
Bunyan’s great allegory exposes the difference between sincere religion and saving faith. Many travel toward the Celestial City yet never enter it because they never came through the Wicket Gate — Yeshua Himself.
This index exists to help honest seekers see that the only lawful entrance is Christ alone, received by grace through faith. All other paths — whether ancient traditions, modern revelations, temple works, or moral effort — are shortcuts that end in destruction.
The true pilgrim does not trust his own righteousness or religious pedigree. He trusts the finished work of the One who said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved” (John 10:9).
The question for every reader is simple: Which target are you aiming at?
Pilgrim’s Progress Reflection
Bunyan wrote this book while imprisoned for preaching the simple gospel. He wanted ordinary people — not scholars — to understand the real Christian journey.
In our day, The Pilgrim’s Progress remains one of the most powerful tools for exposing false assurance. It shows how easily a person can appear religious, travel with true pilgrims for a time, and still be lost if the heart has never truly entered by the narrow gate.
For readers coming out of systems that speak much of Jesus yet require continued human effort and sacred rituals for exaltation, Bunyan’s story is both a warning and a great comfort. The warning is that proximity to truth is not the same as possessing it. The comfort is that the gate still stands open to every sinner who will come to Yeshua in simple faith. Bunyan’s heart was pastoral: he wanted souls to reach the Celestial City, not merely to travel toward it.
Deep-Study
Deep-Study: Why Pilgrim’s Progress Matters for This Project
Bunyan’s allegory is uniquely suited for the purpose of this vault because it was written to help people distinguish between true and false religion using the same language many religious systems still use today.
1. The Exclusivity of the Gate
Every stage reinforces that there is only one lawful entrance: the Wicket Gate. Formalist and Hypocrisy climb over the wall and are lost. Ignorance travels almost to the end but has no certificate and is cast away. This directly confronts any teaching that adds requirements beyond faith in Christ alone.
2. The Danger of Religious Counterfeits
Talkative, By-ends, Demas, and the man in the Iron Cage all represent people who use spiritual language while their hearts remain unchanged. These characters are painfully relevant when religious systems use words like “Jesus,” “salvation,” “grace,” and “eternal life” but attach different meanings and add human works or ordinances as necessary for the highest reward.
3. The Cost and Reality of the Narrow Way
Bunyan does not offer cheap assurance. Faithful is martyred. Christian nearly drowns in the River of Death. Even strong believers can fall into Doubting Castle. Yet the Key of Promise (God’s Word) still opens the door. This balances warning with hope and prepares readers for the real cost of following Christ when family, community, and religious identity are at stake.
4. The True Target
The entire book drives the reader to one conclusion: Yeshua is the only Gate, the only Burden-Bearer, the only Captain, and the only King who can welcome pilgrims into the Celestial City. No amount of religious zeal, temple work, or moral effort can substitute for simple faith in His finished work.
This index exists so that every stage can be studied, linked, and used for teaching, preaching, and personal search. The goal is not to win arguments but to lovingly and factually point sincere seekers to the Yeshua of Scripture — the only name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
