“We Believe in the Same Jesus You Do”
Why the Difference Matters
A very common and sincere statement is:
“Oh, we believe in the same Jesus you do.”
On the surface many of the words sound similar. But when we look closely at what the Bible actually says about who Yeshua is, two very different pictures emerge.
Key Verses and the Actual Difference
Here are some verses people often share, along with how the biblical teaching differs from the Latter-day Saint understanding:
John 1:1-3, 14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… All things were made through Him… And the Word became flesh.”
- Biblical view: Yeshua is the eternal, uncreated God. He has always existed as God.
- LDS view: Jesus is a created spirit child of Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother — a spirit brother to all of us who later became a god.
John 8:58
“Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
- Biblical view: Yeshua claims the divine name of God (Exodus 3:14).
- LDS view: Jesus is a created being who became like God the Father.
Colossians 1:16-17
“For by Him all things were created… He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
- Biblical view: Yeshua is the uncreated Creator of everything.
- LDS view: Jesus created the world, but He Himself was created first.
Isaiah 43:10
“Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me.”
- Biblical view: There is only one God — eternal, with no gods before or after Him.
- LDS view: God the Father was once a man who progressed to godhood; there are many gods.
John 14:6
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
- Biblical view: Salvation is through faith in the finished work of the eternal Son alone.
- LDS view: Salvation (exaltation) requires faith in Jesus plus additional ordinances, temple work, and continued good works.
Bull’s Eye – Yeshua Alone
The question is not whether we both use the name “Jesus.” The question is: Which Jesus?
The Bible presents one eternal, uncreated Savior who is fully God. Any system that presents a different Jesus — a created being who became a god — is presenting “another Jesus” (2 Corinthians 11:4).
