Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

The servant swore to him concerning this matter. Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed… (he prayed for a sign at the well).

Now it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder… She was very beautiful… And the servant ran to meet her…

The servant asked for water, and she not only gave him a drink but also drew water for all his camels. The servant knew this was the sign from the Lord.

Rebekah ran and told her mother’s household… Eventually, Rebekah agreed to go with the servant to become Isaac’s wife.

And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Bull’s Eye: How Genesis 24 Points to Yeshua

This beautiful chapter is a wonderful picture of the Bridegroom seeking a bride.

  • Abraham sends his trusted servant (a type of the Holy Spirit) to find a bride for his beloved son Isaac.
  • The servant goes to the far country, finds Rebekah at the well, and persuades her to leave her old life and come to the son she has never seen.
  • Rebekah believes the servant’s report and willingly goes to Isaac.
  • Isaac receives his bride with great love.

This is a clear picture of the Gospel:

  • The Father sends the Holy Spirit into the world to find a Bride for His beloved Son, Yeshua.
  • The Holy Spirit speaks of the beauty and worth of the Son and calls the Bride to leave her old life.
  • The Bride (the Church) responds in faith and is brought to the Son.
  • Yeshua loves His Bride and will one day receive her at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9).

Key Truth:
Yeshua is the promised Son and the heavenly Bridegroom. The Church is His beloved Bride, called out from the world by the Holy Spirit.
