Joseph Sold into Slavery – A Powerful Type of Yeshua

Genesis 37:1-36

Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. This is the history of Jacob.

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers… Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him…

Now Joseph had a dream… Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem… Joseph was sent by his father…

Now when they saw him afar off… they conspired against him to kill him… They stripped Joseph of his tunic… cast him into a pit… sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver… took Joseph to Egypt.

Then they dipped the tunic in goat’s blood and deceived Jacob, who mourned deeply for his son.

Bull’s Eye: How Genesis 37 Points to Yeshua

Joseph is one of the clearest and most detailed types of Yeshua in the entire Old Testament:

  • Beloved Son: Joseph was the beloved son of his father → Yeshua is the beloved Son of the Father (Matthew 3:17).
  • Sent by the Father: Joseph was sent by his father to his brothers → Yeshua was sent by the Father to His own (John 3:16).
  • Hated and Rejected: Joseph’s brothers hated him without cause and plotted to kill him → Yeshua was hated and rejected by His brothers (John 15:25).
  • Sold for Silver: Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver → Yeshua was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:15).
  • Stripped of His Robe: Joseph’s special tunic was stripped from him → Yeshua was stripped of His garments (John 19:23-24).
  • Cast into a Pit: Joseph was thrown into a pit → Yeshua descended into death and the tomb.
  • False Report of Death: His brothers deceived the father with a blood-stained coat → Yeshua’s death was mourned, yet He rose again.

Strong Messianic Parallel:
The suffering and rejection of Joseph echoes Psalm 22 — the great prophetic psalm of the crucified Messiah:

“They divide My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.” (Psalm 22:18 NKJV)

Key Truth:
What his brothers meant for evil, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20). The same is true of the cross.
