Isaiah 7:14 (10-25)
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

This is one of the most important Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. It points forward to the virgin birth of Yeshua and declares that He will be “God with us.”
Never Read a Bible Verse
Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, “Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!”
Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings. The Lord will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father’s house—days that have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah.”
And it shall come to pass in that day that the Lord will whistle for the fly that is in the farthest part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. They will come, and all of them will rest in the desolate valleys and in the clefts of the rocks, and on all thorns and in all pastures. In the same day the Lord will shave with a hired razor, with those from beyond the River, with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the legs, and will also remove the beard.
It shall be in that day that a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep; so it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give, that he will eat curds; for everyone who is left in the land will eat curds and honey. It shall happen in that day that wherever there used to be a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, it will be for briers and thorns. With arrows and bows men will come there, because all the land will become briers and thorns. And the hills that were cultivated with the hoe, you will not go to because of fear of briers and thorns; but it will become a range for oxen and a place for sheep to roam.

Short Explanation
In a time of crisis for the house of David, God gave a sign: a virgin would conceive and bear a Son called Immanuel — “God with us.” Matthew 1:23 tells us this prophecy was ultimately fulfilled in Yeshua.
Type and Shadow – The Whole Section
Isaiah 7 is not only a prophecy of the virgin birth. The entire chapter functions as a type and shadow pointing to the coming of the Messiah.
- The Crisis: Judah faced imminent destruction by a hostile alliance. The house of David was in danger. Ahaz refused to trust God and turned to foreign powers instead.
- The Sign: God gave a miraculous sign — a virgin would conceive and bear a Son called Immanuel (“God with us”).
- The Judgment: Because of unbelief, desolation would follow. Foreign armies (likened to swarming flies and bees) would invade. The once-fertile land would become overgrown with briers and thorns. The people would be reduced to basic survival.
Fulfillment in the Days of Jesus
Centuries later, when the promised Son was born, a similar scene greeted Him. Israel was again under foreign domination (this time Rome). The land was burdened by heavy taxation and military presence. Many longed for deliverance, but the religious leaders largely rejected the true King, just as Ahaz had rejected the sign in his day.
Into this “briers and thorns” situation, the true Immanuel was born in humble circumstances. The One who is “God with us” entered a broken and oppressed world to accomplish what no political deliverer could — to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
The desolation described in Isaiah becomes a picture of the condition of the world and of Israel at the time the Messiah arrived. The sign of the virgin-born Child was the answer then, just as it is now: only “God with us” can bring true restoration.
