This page collects the strongest biblical warnings against false gospels, other ways of salvation, and any teaching that adds to or subtracts from the finished work of Yeshua Ha-Mashiach. These warnings are especially relevant when engaging religious systems that present a different Jesus or a different gospel.
Jesus’ Warnings
Matthew 7:15-23
Jesus warns about false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing but are inwardly ravenous wolves. He says that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom, but only those who do the will of His Father. Many will claim to have done great works in His name, yet He will say, “I never knew you.”
Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 24
Jesus repeatedly warns His disciples: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” False christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
John 10:1-10
Jesus declares that anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the door is a thief and a robber. He alone is the Door. “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.”
John 14:6
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Paul’s Warnings
Galatians 1:6-9
Paul expresses astonishment that the Galatians are turning to a different gospel. He pronounces a curse on anyone — even an angel from heaven — who preaches a gospel contrary to the one they received. This is one of the strongest warnings in Scripture against altering the gospel.
2 Corinthians 11:3-4
Paul fears that the Corinthians’ minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. He warns about those who preach another Jesus, a different spirit, or a different gospel.
Galatians 2:16
“A man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ.” Justification comes through faith in Christ, not by works of the law.
Galatians 3:1-3
Paul calls the Galatians “foolish” for beginning by the Spirit but now trying to be perfected by the flesh (works).
Colossians 2:8
“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.”
Colossians 2:16-23
Paul warns against being judged regarding food, drink, festivals, new moons, or Sabbaths. These are shadows, but the substance is Christ. He strongly warns against man-made religion and adding requirements beyond Christ.
Philippians 3:2-9
Paul warns against “dogs,” “evil workers,” and “the mutilation” (those insisting on circumcision). He counts all his religious credentials as rubbish compared to knowing Christ and being found in Him — not having his own righteousness from the law, but the righteousness which is through faith in Christ.
Romans 10:2-4
Paul acknowledges that many have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. They seek to establish their own righteousness and have not submitted to the righteousness of God. “Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
Peter’s Warnings
2 Peter 2:1-3
False prophets and false teachers will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them. Many will follow their destructive ways, and the way of truth will be blasphemed because of them. They exploit people with deceptive words.
Acts 4:12 (Peter speaking)
“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
John’s Warnings
1 John 4:1-3
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.
2 John 1:7-11
Many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. Anyone who does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. John warns not to receive or greet those who bring a different doctrine, lest one share in their evil deeds.
Jude’s Warning
Jude 1:3-4
Jude exhorts believers to “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” Certain men have crept in unnoticed who turn the grace of God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Summary: The Exclusive Claims of Christ
These verses make the exclusivity of Christ unmistakably clear:
- John 14:6 – No one comes to the Father except through Me.
- Acts 4:12 – No other name under heaven by which we must be saved.
- 1 Timothy 2:5 – There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
- Hebrews 10:10-14 – By one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
Any gospel that adds requirements, changes the person of Christ, or replaces His finished work with human effort is a different gospel and falls under the warnings above.
