Bull’s Eye: Yeshua is the Light – The Occult is Darkness
The occult promises hidden knowledge and power apart from God. Scripture calls it darkness. Yeshua is the true Light who has overcome it (John 1:4-5, John 8:12). Believers are called out of occult practices into fellowship with Christ alone (2 Cor 6:14-18).
What is the Occult?
“Occult” means hidden or secret. It refers to practices and beliefs that seek supernatural knowledge, power, or contact through means other than the God of the Bible.
Common Practices:
- Divination (astrology, tarot, palmistry, Ouija boards)
- Magic and sorcery (spells, curses, witchcraft, Wicca)
- Spiritism (mediums, channeling, séances, contacting the dead)
- Modern forms (New Age, crystals, Reiki, law of attraction, occult symbolism)
Key Distinction: Unlike cults that claim Christian identity, the occult is openly or secretly opposed to biblical truth. Some overlap exists with New Age and certain cult practices.
Biblical View & Warnings
- Explicitly Forbidden: Deuteronomy 18:9-14 – No divination, sorcery, mediums, witchcraft, or necromancy.
- Why it matters: It opens doors to demonic influence and replaces trust in God with counterfeit power (1 Tim 4:1, Eph 5:11).
- New Testament Example: Acts 19:18-20 – New believers burned their occult books.
- Yeshua’s Victory: Colossians 2:15 – Christ disarmed the powers and authorities through the cross.
Important Note: Scripture makes no distinction between “white magic” and “dark magic.” All of it is rebellion against God.
Pilgrim’s Progress Reflection
The occult is like the Flatterer or the enchantments in the Valley of the Shadow of Death — seductive shortcuts that lead deeper into bondage. Only the Key of Promise and looking to the lifted-up Savior (the true Bronze Serpent) brings deliverance.
